Yes, the aesthetic is compelling. Yes, it stirs cultural sentiment. But make no mistake: every image submitted, every selfie uploaded, contributes to a growing corpus of biometric and contextual data, silently enriching some of the world’s most powerful generative models.

At Greyhound Research, we have observed this pattern repeatedly: a consumer-facing AI feature gains rapid adoption, and behind the scenes, an unchecked pipeline of personal data is activated, often without meaningful consent or institutional safeguards.

This is not merely a passing trend. It is a deliberate and highly efficient data capture operation cloaked in innocence. In our conversations with global CIOs and CISOs, the concerns are immediate and justified: How much sensitive facial data has entered the public domain? What unintended corporate artefacts, including client documents, whiteboards, and security badges, among others, now reside inside training datasets? What downstream models or products will these inputs ultimately shape?

These are not hypotheticals. Within just one hour of launching this feature, OpenAI recorded one million new users. ChatGPT has now surpassed 150 million weekly active users, with millions of images being uploaded daily, all of it silently feeding a training architecture that remains opaque, proprietary, and well beyond enterprise control. At Greyhound Research, we view this surge in user activity as a calculated strategic victory for OpenAI but a clear and present governance risk for the rest of the ecosystem.

This is not merely a blind spot in AI policy. It is a warning shot. And the implications extend far beyond IT operations. Regulators must pay close attention because this trend marks a critical inflexion point in how facial and contextual data are captured, repurposed, and monetised at scale.

If you care about not being compromised, not being impersonated, surveilled, or socially engineered, read this note carefully. Participation is no longer optional. It is already underway. The only question is whether you and your organisation are prepared.

While the opening chapter of this trend plays out in the visual language of charm and nostalgia, the operational mechanics are far more technical and far more concerning. Once a user uploads a photograph into tools like OpenAI’s DALL·E or its various third-party interfaces, a complex data transaction begins. The image is not merely processed for a one-time aesthetic rendering. Instead, it is deconstructed and analysed at multiple levels: facial geometry, emotional expression, background cues, clothing patterns, and spatial context. Each element is extracted, tokenised, and integrated into the system’s ongoing model training process.

At Greyhound Research, we refer to this phenomenon as participatory training at scale, where users voluntarily provide the training data needed to make these platforms more precise, more expressive, and more commercially viable. The prompts they enter, the edits they make, and the preferences they indicate all of these serve as reinforcement feedback for the model. It is about industrial-scale behavioural capture, dressed up as entertainment and occurring at a speed and scale that current governance frameworks are not equipped to manage.

From a commercial standpoint, the Ghibli-style image generation feature is nothing short of a masterstroke for OpenAI. It has delivered outsized returns across user growth, data enrichment, brand engagement, and market positioning — all with minimal incremental investment and virtually no regulatory friction. The velocity and scale of adoption have been unprecedented.

CEO Sam Altman confirmed that ChatGPT gained over one million users within the first hour of launching the feature, pushing the platform past 150 million weekly active users for the first time this year. Since then, millions of images have been generated daily, flooding OpenAI’s training pipelines with fresh, richly annotated visual content. The kind of material that would traditionally take years and millions in acquisition spend to collect through structured channels.

This trend has unlocked a series of high-leverage advantages for OpenAI.

First, it has provided access to a remarkably diverse, high-quality dataset drawn from a global user base. These images arrive pre-tagged, emotionally expressive, culturally varied, and often captured in real-world settings, offering a degree of contextual richness that is rare in synthetic or institutional datasets.

Second, user interactions with the tool, including preferences, retries, and corrections, generate a stream of implicit fine-tuning feedback. When users say “make me look older” or reject a likeness as inaccurate, they are unknowingly training the model in real-time without requiring APIs, labelled corpora, or specialised engineers.

Third, the emotional appeal of the generated portraits creates a powerful stickiness. These are not just outputs; they are artefacts of identity, nostalgia, and humour. By allowing users to see themselves reflected back through the lens of a beloved animation style, OpenAI has fostered a unique psychological bond between user and platform, one that drives the frequency of use, platform loyalty, and social virality.

Finally, perhaps most strategically, all of this is being achieved without the need for institutional negotiations, consent frameworks, or legal data-sharing agreements. Users agree to vague and one-sided terms of service and, in doing so, contribute directly to the commercial roadmap of a platform they have no influence over and little visibility into.

At Greyhound Research, we maintain that this is not incidental. It is a deliberately architected feedback loop, one designed to extract maximum value from voluntary user behaviour while operating in a grey zone of regulatory oversight. The brilliance of the strategy lies not only in the technology but also in the psychology. OpenAI has turned the act of being observed into a game and, in doing so, has normalised a new mode of data collection that blends entertainment, consent, and surveillance into a single frictionless user experience.

As enterprise leaders accelerate their experimentation with generative AI, the implications of viral user trends such as Ghibli-style image generation cannot be treated as a consumer-only phenomenon. What may begin as casual personal engagement often seeps into the enterprise perimeter — blurring the boundaries between private data, corporate environments, and institutional assets. It is precisely in these grey zones that systemic risk takes root.

One of the most pressing concerns is the uncontrolled expansion of third-party training datasets, often seeded inadvertently by employees themselves. As staff upload images from their devices, sometimes during work hours and sometimes from office environments, they may unintentionally capture sensitive background elements such as security badges, whiteboards, client deliverables, or other proprietary artefacts. Once submitted to a public generative AI platform, this content may be absorbed into a broader model training pipeline with no mechanism for redaction or deletion. These interactions bypass enterprise data governance protocols entirely, creating exposure vectors that legal, compliance, and security teams cannot easily monitor or mitigate.

Even more troubling is the potential for facial recognition and biometric profiling. While Ghibli-style portraits may appear stylised and abstract, they are often grounded in facial vectors and structural patterns that remain intact during processing. These renderings can — and likely will — be used to further refine facial recognition models, emotion classifiers, and identity mapping tools. In 2020, IBM made a principled exit from the facial recognition market, citing concerns about racial bias, authoritarian misuse, and erosion of civil liberties. In a formal letter to the U.S. Congress, IBM called for urgent federal oversight and committed to steering clear of technologies that could compromise ethical standards or democratic values.

Their concerns are not isolated. The European Union’s AI Act has formally classified facial recognition as a “high-risk” application, subject to strict controls and transparency requirements. Similarly, the White House AI Bill of Rights and the OECD AI Principles explicitly caution against the unregulated use of biometric systems. These frameworks reflect a growing global consensus that AI models trained on human likeness, particularly without explicit consent, pose a fundamental threat to privacy, security, and civil agency.

Yet despite these warnings, many enterprises remain exposed, often unknowingly. Employees engaging with consumer-grade AI tools are rarely informed of the downstream implications. The terms of service governing these platforms are opaque by design, often granting broad reuse rights to the vendor while denying users any real form of opt-out or data withdrawal. This is not meaningful consent. It is what we at Greyhound Research define as a consent mirage. The illusion of choice in a system architected to ensure data capture by default.

Equally problematic are the security blind spots this behaviour creates. A seemingly harmless selfie taken at a company offsite may, upon closer examination, reveal confidential project codenames scribbled on a whiteboard, printed documents on a desk, or location metadata embedded in the image itself. These unintentional disclosures are not hypothetical. We have observed them in live advisory scenarios with enterprise clients across sectors.

While the enterprise risks of Ghibli-style image generation are considerable, the deeper and arguably more permanent impact is being felt at the individual level. This trend extends well beyond corporate firewalls or IT policies. It is reshaping the norms of personal data sharing, digital identity, and emotional manipulation in ways that many users neither see nor understand. Each participation in this trend, however innocent it may appear, represents a silent trade-off: privacy exchanged for novelty, identity repurposed for model training, and autonomy ceded in the name of entertainment.

One of the most immediate consequences is the erosion of private environments. Uploaded images rarely contain just a single face in isolation. They often include glimpses of a user’s home, family members, personal effects, pets, artwork, or even location-sensitive objects. These images, once submitted, are no longer under the user’s control. They become part of a proprietary pipeline whose data retention policies are ambiguous at best and whose training models may persist for years. We are teaching them that it is acceptable to offer up their face, their environment, and their personality in exchange for fleeting digital delight. There is no moment of pause. No embedded mechanism of protection. No structured path to recourse once the data leaves their hands.

To safeguard enterprise assets, protect employee rights, and maintain long-term organisational integrity in the face of rapidly evolving generative AI use, CIOs and CISOs must act decisively and not reactively. The Ghibli-style trend may appear trivial on the surface, but its operational and governance implications are anything but.

What follows is a set of ten strategic imperatives for enterprise leaders navigating this new terrain.

The first step is to conduct a comprehensive organisational audit. Enterprises must identify where and how image-based generative AI tools are being accessed across departments formally through licensed platforms or informally through personal devices and unmonitored channels. Without this visibility, no governance framework can be meaningfully enforced.

Second, technology and security leaders must launch targeted internal awareness campaigns. These should go beyond generic AI literacy and speak directly to the risks associated with uploading personal or corporate images, including how visual data, background artefacts, and facial information can be ingested into public training models. These campaigns must be accessible, scenario-driven, and tailored by role and geography.

Third, organisations must issue a formal AI Use Advisory that includes clear dos and don’ts for both internal teams and external vendors. This advisory should be grounded in policy, approved by legal, and reinforced through leadership communications. A sample of such an advisory, provided by Greyhound Research, is included later in this report and may be adapted with attribution.

Fourth, existing governance frameworks must be updated to explicitly cover the use of generative AI for image creation. Many current policies focus narrowly on text-based tools or licensed enterprise software, leaving significant gaps around visual content and consumer-grade platforms. Policy language must be broadened to reflect the multi-modal nature of AI risk.

Fifth, CIOs should demand greater transparency from vendors whose platforms are used to generate or process images. This includes detailed documentation of data retention policies, model training procedures, opt-out mechanisms, and user control over generated outputs. Vendors that are unwilling to provide this clarity should be flagged as high-risk.

Sixth, proactive monitoring and mitigation mechanisms must be implemented. Enterprises need visibility into how generative AI tools are being used across the organisation, what types of data are being submitted, and whether any patterns of risky behaviour are emerging. Where appropriate, usage logging and sandboxing should be considered.

Seventh, procurement and vendor management teams should include AI-related data use clauses in all new and renewed contracts. This ensures that external agencies, consultants, and creative partners do not unknowingly or irresponsibly submit enterprise-related visuals to public AI systems under the guise of experimentation or campaign work.

Eighth, organisations must create escalation pathways and incident response workflows for AI-related breaches or misuses. If an employee uploads a client site photo to a public tool and it appears in a future dataset, there must be a protocol for investigation, disclosure, and mitigation just as there is for more traditional data incidents.

Ninth, CIOs should engage cross-functionally with HR, Legal, and Corporate Communications to ensure AI-related guidance is not confined to IT policy documents. The human implications, including employee likeness, workplace identity, and digital well-being, require a more holistic communications and governance approach.

And finally, the tenth imperative is to model the behaviour expected of others. Enterprise leadership must visibly embody responsible AI usage. When the executive team refrains from using stylised image generators, it sends a message. When policies are enforced at the top, they gain credibility across the enterprise. Culture, after all, is not declared; it is demonstrated.

Even if your organisation already has policies in place or signed agreements with employees and partners, that alone is not enough. People are not policies — they are human, and humans are fallible. They follow trends, they act impulsively, and they forget what’s written in policy binders. This is your opportunity to reinforce expectations, not assume compliance. Because a reminder delivered at the right moment can prevent a headline no one wants to read.

While enterprises build governance structures, individuals remain the first line of defence. Whether you are an employee, executive, student, or parent, your choices, what you upload, share, or engage with, have long-term implications for your digital identity and safety.

Below are ten ways to protect yourself, your likeness, and your environment when interacting with AI image generators.

First, pause before you upload. Ask yourself whether the image is truly necessary for the task at hand. Is it identifiable? Is it private? Does it include others who may not have consented to be part of the dataset? The simple act of hesitation can often be enough to prevent regret.

Second, take active steps to blur the background, both literally and figuratively. Use editing tools to obscure any identifiable objects, company logos, location markers, or people in the image besides yourself. Avoid capturing anything that hints at your employer, home, school, or daily routine.

Third, always review the fine print. Most generative AI platforms embed critical clauses about data retention and training rights in their terms of service. If the language is vague or, worse, absent, treat it as a red flag. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

Fourth, avoid platform creep. Never use your work laptop, employer-issued phone, or enterprise login credentials to engage with consumer-grade AI tools. Even when using your personal device, consider creating separate accounts that are not tied to your professional identity.

Fifth, educate those around you. If you understand the risks, share them. Talk to your colleagues, your children, your parents. Most individuals participate in these trends without realising the depth of what they’re handing over. Awareness is still the most effective form of defence.

Sixth, opt out where possible and speak up when it isn’t. Some platforms offer model training opt-outs or image deletion requests buried within support pages. Use them. Where they are missing, contact the provider and log your concern. Silence perpetuates permissiveness.

Seventh, track your digital footprint. Reverse image search your likeness occasionally to see where your generated content might be appearing online. The AI ecosystem moves fast. What is uploaded today may be reused in unexpected ways tomorrow.

Eighth, resist the temptation to overshare for virality. Stylised portraits can be fun, but when posted widely across social media, they create trailheads that AI crawlers, bots, and malicious actors can easily exploit. Once an image is indexed publicly, control becomes an illusion.

Ninth, be especially vigilant with children’s images. Generative AI models are getting better at learning from younger faces and may even use them for training age progression models. Because it’s not about what you think is being shared — it’s about what the machine sees, stores, and learns. The moment we stop asking, “Is this safe?” and start saying, “It’s probably fine,” we’ve already surrendered more than we intended.

And ultimately, that dismissal can come at a cost — one that impacts not just your privacy, but potentially your finances, your digital security, and your personal wellbeing. In an age where your likeness can be cloned, your voice can be mimicked, and your patterns can be predicted, what seems like nothing today could turn into a very real, very personal price tomorrow.

Purpose

We’re issuing this advisory to clarify how image-based generative AI tools should and shouldn’t be used across the organisation. With the recent rise of stylised portrait generators — including those that mimic animation styles like Studio Ghibli — we’ve seen a sharp increase in tools that ask users to upload personal photos. While these may seem harmless, they raise serious concerns around privacy, data security, and compliance with company policy. Many of these platforms lack transparency around how images are stored, shared, or used to train commercial AI models.

Our aim with this communication is simple: to help ensure that all employees, contractors, and partners understand what’s at stake — and to make sure we’re all aligned on how to use these technologies responsibly, in line with our company’s standards for security, governance, and ethical AI use.

Mandatory Usage Guidelines

  1. Do not upload any images containing yourself, colleagues, clients, or enterprise-related visuals to public AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, DALL·E, mobile apps, or third-party web tools) without prior written authorisation from both your direct manager and the Information Security function.
  2. Refrain from using AI tools that require access to your photo library, camera, or social media accounts for image input, especially on devices used for work. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) users must treat such apps as untrusted until cleared by IT security.
  3. External vendors, creative agencies, and contract partners must not use image-generating AI tools for any project involving our brand, personnel, facilities, or materials without explicit written consent from the enterprise legal and technology functions.
  4. All use of AI involving imagery must comply with our enterprise’s information security, legal, and procurement policies, including those related to data retention, third-party model training rights, public cloud exposure, and cross-border data transfer.
  5. Do not test or evaluate AI tools involving image generation on enterprise content, past campaigns, or real-world photos, even under the guise of “internal testing” or “mock-ups,” without documented risk clearance from IT and Legal.
  6. If you have previously used these tools in any capacity that could intersect with our organisation’s content, locations, or personnel, you are required to self-report the incident to your manager and the Information Security team for further review and documentation.
  7. Do not forward or circulate stylised images, generative AI content, or screenshots derived from these tools using enterprise email, Teams, Slack, or other official channels. Treat such content as unverified and potentially non-compliant with company policy.
  8. Ensure that any AI-related marketing, product testing, or pilot engagements involving vendors explicitly exclude unauthorised image generation in contracts, SOWs, NDAs, and privacy addendums. Procurement and Legal must approve all related clauses.
  9. Use only enterprise-approved applications and tools when working on AI or media-related initiatives. A centralised list of approved platforms is maintained by the CIO Office and updated quarterly. Any requests for new tool access must follow the standard IT onboarding procedure.
  10. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of access or contract cancellation, depending on the severity of the violation and associated data risks.
