Questions CIOs Often Ask On Master Data Management

57 views Reading Time: 3 minutes

Enterprises from across the globe continue to wrestle with data expansion proliferating in terms of size, complexity and sources. In order to support this, IT teams are investing in IT systems to keep up with Data Quality (DQ) – whether delivered on-premise, or through managed services or cloud services. The need to invest is increasingly important to ensure end-user trust in critical enterprise applications and data. While most IT teams have dabbled in early forms of DQ initiatives like data relevance in application upgrades or database migrations, many continue to struggle with mature and complex Master Data Management (MDM) initiatives. Below is a quick list of questions that Greyhound Research received while helping a few clients define their MDM strategy in the ASEAN region.

  • We don’t quite understand Master Data Management and how it can help us? Are my peers in other organizations also exploring MDM?
  • What are some of the building blocks to make MDM work? Do I need to include MDM as part of my enterprise applications and infrastructure strategy?
  • I’m the CIO, but is this my decision alone? Or should I get business leaders involved in the decision making? How can I get the business leaders to own such initiatives?
  • How do I secure budget sanctions and funding for the MDM imitative? What can I include in the business case and outcome to convince the management?
  • How do I approach information governance? Do I need to relook all – policies, people and processes?
  • Do I combine MDM, BI/analytics and BPM initiatives? Will this increase the value and ROI of both investments?
  • More to this point, how do I better manage impact of MDM on some of my other initiatives like Big data, cloud, social & mobile?
  • How do I go about selecting and deploying technology to support MDM?
  • Should MDM be part of a comprehensive enterprise information management (EIM) strategy?
  • Do I leverage MDM across multiple functions in the company? Or should I start with a single function, prove the outcome and then extend to other functions?
